Feta & Oregano: A Family Legacy in the Heart of Brussels

Feta & Oregano is a true testament to family, heritage, and hard work. Owned by husband-and-wife duo Marsani Ayrton and Maria Moukas, both born in Brussels to Greek parents, their restaurants bring the authentic flavors of Greece to Ixelles.

Marsani’s roots trace back to the island of Samos, while Maria’s parents hail from Crete. This rich family heritage inspired the couple to create Feta & Oregano six years ago. They started with their first location in Dilbeek, just outside Brussels, but soon expanded to Ixelles, where their second restaurant opened during the COVID lockdown. The Ixelles location became a new hub for authentic Greek food in the city. They began with takeaway and delivery services, of course, since everything was closed during lockdown. They began welcoming diners into their beautifully restored restaurant in mid-2022, which remains a favorite for both dining in, deliveries and takeaway.

Authentic Flavors, Family Recipes

Feta & Oregano is more than just a restaurant; it’s a love letter to Greek tradition. Each location is led by a dedicated chef, and the recipes they follow come straight from family recipes. Marsani’s mother, Vassiliki, has offered some family secrets that are proudly displayed on their menu. Family is at the heart of everything they do—portraits of loved ones adorn the walls, and their daughter, Eirini, even has a dish named after her! With their growing family, including their two-year-old daughter and a second child on the way, the restaurant is a celebration of life, culture, and hard work.

The Ixelles location features a cozy main dining room with 30 seats, a downstairs room with space for 25 more (which can be privately rented) and, in warmer months, a terrace that can accommodate 70 guests.

A Memorable Dining Experience

I recently had the pleasure of dining at their Ixelles location in Brussels, and it was an experience to remember. We started with a selection of typical Greek appetizers, or Ta Prota. The table was filled with bowls of creamy tzatziki, tangy tarama, and a perfectly spiced Tyrokafteri (spicy feta dip), which was served with delicious bread, sprinkled with oregano.

Next came a variety of seafood: scampi with feta and honey, giant fried calamari rings, and tender grilled octopus. These were served alongside a vibrant Choriatiki salad made with juicy tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, creamy feta, bell peppers, red onions, and Kalamata olives.

For the main course, we were treated to the best moussaka I’ve ever had—a family recipe passed down through generations. This layered masterpiece was accompanied by grilled lamb chops, which were thick, juicy, and cooked to perfection. On the side, we enjoyed Greek-style pasta in a rich tomato sauce. Everything served at Feta & Oregano is homemade, staying true to the traditions of Greek cuisine.

A True Taste of Greece

Marsani and Maria’s dedication to their craft is evident in every bite. Coming from a background steeped in hospitality—Maria’s parents owned a Greek restaurant, and Marsani has been in Horeca since the age of 14. The couple’s decision to create something of their own has brought them immense joy..

While the Dilbeek location remains a cornerstone of their journey, the Ixelles restaurant has established itself as a must-visit destination in Brussels. Whether you’re stopping by for a takeaway or dining in on their terrace in the summer, you’ll leave with a full stomach and a warm heart.
